Tanzania Zanzibar

Zanzibar, Tanzania – 2006. Following our Kenyan and Tanzanian Safaris we went to Zanzibar for a few days R&R. We spent two nights in Stone Town and three nights at the Karafuu Hotel on the Eastern coast of the island. As you can see from the photos below, we did the obligatory spice tour. Zanzibar is an island in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of mainland Tanzania.

Old Stone Town is a warren of small alleys lined with many interesting shops and filled with lots of touts.
This is the altar in the Anglican Cathedral which was built in the 1870s on the site of the old slave market.
A memorial to the slave trade.
Under the rule of the Omani Arabs, close to 600,000 slaves were sold through Zanzibar between 1830 and 1873. The British closed down the slave market.

Nutmeg comes from the inner seed and Mace from the red filament that surrounds it.

This is Arabic coffee which grows on trees rather than the coffee bushes we saw in Kenya.

Cardamom. The plant grows quite high but the seeds (which make the spice) grow out along the ground in bead-like tendrils.
Our “Spice Boy” is climbing the tree to get a sample of pepper. The pepper comes from the vine, not the tree.
